What are Instagram Stories? Instagram is rolling out a new slideshow-sharing feature that’s best described as nearly identical to Snapchat stories.
Instagram rolled out an update to its app Monday with some unassuming release notes:
Little did we know, hidden among those performance improvements was a brand new feature that’s rolling out over the next few weeks called
Snapchat Stories Instagram Stories.
With Stories, you’ll be able to post photos and videos throughout the day and your feed will expire 24 hours after you’ve posted them. You’ll even be able to add emoji, text, and sketches to your photos and videos. If all that sounds a little familiar, that’s because it is. Snapchat introduced an incredibly similar feature nearly three years ago. Good news is, if you’ve used Snapchat’s Story feature, you’ll be ready to tackle Instagram’s Story feature.
As for why the company says it launched the new (but entirely familiar) feature, Instagram says it’s a way to alleviate the worry of annoying your friends with too many posts:
With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want.
Grrrreat. My overposting worries might be alleviated, but now I’ve got to remember to share my daily goings on on Snapchat and Instagram. What a world.
We’ll be digging in to Instagram Stories just as soon as it rolls out to our devices. Be sure to check back for our how-to guide on using Snapch— er, Instagram Stories. I’m going to have to get used to that.

Does Instagram’s new feature remind you of Snapchat Stories? Maybe it’s just me. Either way, let us know in the comments!
